Scarification is the process of removing moss, dead grass, thatch build-up and other organic debris from a lawn. This can be done using a hand rake if the thatch is not too thick. For larger lawns and where thatch is denser, Love That Lawn uses an electric scarifier.
An electric scarifier looks similar to a lawnmower. It has blades underneath which tease out thatch and moss.
When carrying out lawn scarification, we scarify your lawn several times to ensure we remove as much of the unwanted materials as possible. We then rake up and dispose of waste. The process is highly effective at removing dead moss, leaves, grass and other organic matter from the lawn.
It is best to scarify lawns in the spring, ahead of other lawn maintenance procedures like top dressing and applying fertiliser. At this time of year, the lawn will recover much more quickly. Autumn is also a suitable time to scarify your lawn, and light scarification can be beneficial during the summer, depending on growing conditions.
